5 Marketing Myths (And the Truth Behind Them)
When people hear "Marketing," they often picture someone making flyers, posting on Facebook, or picking out company swag. While those things are certainly part of the job, there's a lot more happening behind the scenes than most people realize.
Here are five common myths about Marketing…and the reality behind them.
Myth #1: Marketing just makes flyers
Reality: Flyers are actually a very small part of what we do. Our team manages everything from social media to email campaigns, content for our website, trade shows, videos, newsletters, business cards, promotional items, photography, events, special projects for Jeff & Herb, and much more.
We also work closely with our supplier partners to maximize marketing dollars that help fund many of these efforts. If it represents H&S to a customer, employee, or vendor, there's a good chance Marketing had a hand in it.
Myth #2: Marketing only works with the Sales department
Reality: We work with everyone.
Marketing supports nearly every department in the company.
Planning a customer event? Marketing.
Signage? Marketing.
Launching a new supplier program? Marketing.
Employee communications? Marketing.
Golf outing? Marketing.
Holiday videos? Definitely Marketing!
One of the best parts of the job is getting to work with so many different people across H&S.
Myth #3: Once something is designed, the work is finished
Reality: That's usually just the beginning.
Take a supplier promotion, for example. Before you ever see the finished flyer, there may have been planning meetings, content writing, graphic design, supplier approvals, website updates, email campaign, social media posts, and coordination with the sales team.
A simple one-page flyer often represents many hours of work behind the scenes.
Myth #4: Marketing is all about being creative
Reality: Creativity is only half the job.
The other half is solving problems.
How do we help customers find us?
How do we explain our breadth of products?
How do we make an event successful?
How do we tell the H&S story in a way that stands out?
Good marketing isn't just about making something look nice, it's about helping people understand who we are and why they should choose H&S.
Myth #5: Marketing can read minds
Reality: We wish!
One of the biggest challenges isn't designing the project…it's knowing about it early enough to help. The earlier Marketing is involved, the better we can plan, design, promote, and support your project. Whether it's a customer event, supplier promotion, recruiting effort, or internal communication, a little advance notice goes a long way.
So don't be afraid to reach out…we're always happy to help.
Final Thought
Marketing's job isn't simply to make things look good. Our goal is to help H&S grow by supporting our employees, strengthening our supplier partnerships, and making it easier for customers to do business with us.
And yes...we still make flyers.
